HIKE TO UPPER CATARACT LAKE – SUN OCT 13

ABOUT THIS EVENT: Join HWP for hike to Upper Cataract Lake! We will hike approximately 10-11 miles to Upper Cataract Lake, along the way we will pass Surprise Lake and Lower Cataract Lake. This is a great Gore Range hike with a bit of everything – aspens, pines, lakes!

TOTAL Distance: 10-11 miles; elevation gain: approx. 2500ft
• 8:15a– Meet at carpool lot in Silverthorne
• 8:20a- Depart for TH
• 9:00- Meet at Surprise Lake TH
• 9:05a – Start hiking
• 2:30p – Return to TH (approx.)
• 2:45p – TBD late lunch
CARPOOL: We will meet at 8:15A at the Silverthorne Rec Center, 430 Rainbow Drive, Silverthorne CO 80498 – meet at the SOUTH SIDE of the parking lot (see pic below). There will be no organizer led carpool PRIOR to the Silverthorne Rec Center Lot. Please coordinate if you are coming from the Front Range.
TRAILHEAD: Surprise Lake Trailhead (the Hike to Upper Cataract Lakes starts here at Surprise Lake TH)
Driving Directions TO TRAILHEAD: From I-70 take Exit 205, Silverthorne/Dillon, and travel north on HWY 9. Travel 16 miles north on HWY 9. Just after mile marker 118 turn left onto Heeney Rd (County Road 30). Follow Heeney Road 5.3 miles and turn left onto Cataract Creek Road (FDR 1725). Continue for 2.5 miles to the Surprise Lake Trailhead parking area on the left which is past the Cataract Creek Campground.
LUNCH: If and where TBD, good options include Angry James Brewery and Bakers Brewery.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: Intermediate – This hike has a total elevation gain of approximately 2500k ft. We may possibly encounter some patches of snow, some route finding, some climbing over downed trees.
FITNESS LEVEL: Fit – You should be active and able to spend 5-6 hours moving at a moderate 2 mph hiking pace without significant breaks.
PACE: We will keep an average 2 MPH pace along the route with a few short breaks, with a longer break at the highest lake.

DOGS are welcome. We will cross streams and other water sources, but please bring water and anything else your dog may need for the trail.
